The skin – as the largest human organ – ages and shows this mainly through wrinkles and pigment spots. But over time, scars can also appear, for example due to acne, and overall the skin becomes flabbier with age. This is where skin resurfacing can help.
Skin resurfacing is a laser treatment of the affected skin areas. A laser is used to carefully remove the top layers of skin. Usually CO₂ lasers, erbium YAG lasers or the PicoSure laser are used. There are also combined devices that include both wavelengths. However, a small amount of the laser light also penetrates the collagen. This is intentional, because it stimulates the formation of new collagen. And collagen makes the skin look firmer. The top layer of skin then peels off and the skin underneath renews itself.
Skin resurfacing can be used for many symptoms, from removing acne scars to treating accident scars and lightening pigmentary changes such as age spots to reducing or removing facial wrinkles. Skin resurfacing can also be performed without anaesthesia for smaller areas. When treating the entire face or larger areas, local anaesthesia should be used in any case. The treated skin requires special attention and care after skin resurfacing. Cool compresses help against the usual tensions and redness. Ointments prevent infections.
Age spots disappear or are greatly lightened by the treatment. The same applies to wrinkles: Deeper wrinkles are significantly reduced, smaller wrinkles disappear completely. However, it takes about one to two weeks for the fresh skin to grow back completely. It will then remain slightly red for a while, but can be easily covered with make-up. The fresh skin needs special care and should be protected from too much sunlight.
